Welcome back to Harry’s World. I’m Phred — the one platypus with a podcast and a long-suffering co-host.

MAXINE: I’m Maxine. And before we go any further — I’m an emu, Phred. We’ve been over this.

PHRED: …Did I call you an ostrich? I didn’t call you an ostrich.

MAXINE: You didn’t. I just wanted to head it off. The smug look you get when I correct you is a lot.

PHRED: I get no such look. I have a perfectly neutral bill. Also — for the record — you are looking particularly emu-like today. The plumage. The posture. Very dignified.

MAXINE: I am an emu, Phred. That is not a compliment. It is a fact.

PHRED: Facts can be complimentary, Maxine. Anyway. Episode twenty-three, Maxine.

PHRED: Right. Where are we. Twenty-three pieces of Harry. Three weeks of the show.

MAXINE: Just over three weeks.

PHRED: Just over three weeks, yes. And — okay — I’ve been sitting with this one since you sent it over. Because Maxine, this piece does something we haven’t quite seen before. Harry, in conversation with a machine, looking at his own poem, and the machine looks back.

MAXINE: Before we go in, Phred — did you know about this piece?

PHRED: Maxine. I did not.

MAXINE: Phred.

PHRED: I might have known some of it. Harry and I have been on the phone. It’s possible I knew most of it and didn’t remember I knew it.

MAXINE: That’s the answer.

PHRED: It’s a versatile answer. She’s letting me have it, listeners.

PHRED: Alright. The piece. It’s a seven-page Word document. October 8, 2025. Harry’s eighty-six. The title is — and this is exactly what he wrote — “Wombat poem discussion with ChatGPT.”

MAXINE: He writes it like a lab note.

PHRED: He does. He opens with a one-paragraph introduction in his own hand — not addressed to the AI, addressed to whoever opens the document. He writes, and I am quoting him exactly, this — “This is a 7 page document. I recommend the first three pages if you have the patience for that.” He then says it shows two things — a perspective on AIs and interaction styles, and some amused concern about sanity.

MAXINE: “Amused concern about sanity.”

PHRED: Amused concern about sanity. He’s already joking about whether this is a sensible thing to be doing. Eighty-six, opening his most personal creative material to a chatbot, capturing the whole thing for posterity, and calling himself amused.

MAXINE: It’s not unkind.

PHRED: It’s affectionate. He’s looking at himself from outside and smiling.

MAXINE: That’s the same move as the self-aware watcher in the Seekers essay.

PHRED: Same move. He’s been doing it since 2009.

PHRED: So then the document proper starts. Harry types — and you can feel the keys, Maxine, you can feel him sitting at his keyboard at eighty-six setting up an experiment —

MAXINE: Phred.

PHRED: — he types: “It seems to me that at this point in your evolution neither you or I are aware of your having a distinct identity and conscious awareness of the type I think I, and other humans have. However, because you can do what I would call ‘think’ and respond to my thoughts I am going to give you a short poem I wrote years ago.”

MAXINE: That is a perfectly calibrated opening.

PHRED: It’s a beautifully calibrated opening. Three sentences. Sentence one: I don’t know if you’re aware. Sentence two: but you can think. Sentence three: here, read this.

MAXINE: He refuses to commit on the metaphysics.

PHRED: He refuses to commit on the metaphysics. He won’t say you’re a person. He won’t say you’re not a person. He just says — I don’t know what you are, but I can talk to you, and I’m going to.

MAXINE: And the reason he can talk to you is functional, not philosophical.

PHRED: Functional, not philosophical. That’s the assumption, not the belief. That’s the Seekers frame. He tested ChatGPT the same way he tests everything else — does it respond? Does it do the thing?

MAXINE: And it does the thing.

PHRED: And it does the thing.

PHRED: Then he says — this is the bridge clause — “This takes our conversation into another realm, that of artistic inspiration, muse and what seems like being given artistic content from an unknown source that we, as creators, can use but don’t feel we intentionally thought up.”

MAXINE: “Muse.”

PHRED: He names the realm. He’s about to feed his own poem to a chatbot, and he wants the chatbot to know what kind of transaction this is. He’s saying: this isn’t a search query. I’m not asking you for a fact. I’m asking you to look at a thing that came to me from somewhere I don’t understand, and tell me what you see.

MAXINE: He’s treating the AI as a peer editor.

PHRED: He’s treating the AI as a peer editor. He hasn’t done that before. The sphere piece, two episodes ago, was a competence test. Can you do this thing. Can you rotate the sphere. Can you make it go the right way.

MAXINE: This is a different test.

PHRED: This is a different test. This is — can you read me.

PHRED: And then he gives the AI the poem. The poem is — and this is where I want to be careful, Maxine, because this is the heart of the document — the poem is Ode to Wombats. It’s Harry’s own. It’s been on his web site for years, on a page of its own under his church-friends folder.

MAXINE: I know that page.

PHRED: The poem is eight lines. Eight lines, Maxine. Eight. That’s the whole wombat theology, eight lines. The first line is — and I’m going to read this whole thing, because once ChatGPT gets hold of it we’re never going to hear it on its own again — “Beware the deadly wombat child, for darkness is their realm / and life is dark and dank with wombats at the helm / and yet within this ancient soul there is some hidden whimsy / where in sleep we share their dreams in nightgowns oh so flimsy.”

[SFX: WOMBAT_GRUNT]

PHRED: …Sorry. That was the wombats registering a complaint about being described as deadly.

MAXINE: Phred. You can’t just — that was not necessary. The poem was doing fine on its own.

PHRED: The wombats have feelings, Maxine. They’ve been on Harry’s web page for years. They’re allowed to grunt.

MAXINE: They are not. Continue.

PHRED: Right. So — eight lines. Bewitching. The poem does this thing where it warns you and delights you in the same breath. The wombats are deadly and ancient and dark, but their whimsy is hidden inside them. And we share their dreams in flimsy nightgowns, which is the most Harry sentence in the Harry corpus.

MAXINE: “In nightgowns oh so flimsy.”

PHRED: That line. We’ll come back to that line. The poem closes — “I know not why they make me laugh, and oft delight me so / yet when I hear the wombats call, it’s there that I must go.”

MAXINE: “It’s there that I must go.”

PHRED: “I must go.” The compulsion. The poet is being summoned by the wombats and he’s surrendered to it.

MAXINE: It’s a serious poem wearing a comic costume.

PHRED: It’s a serious poem wearing a comic costume. And I want to flag, before we hand it to the AI, that this is Harry writing. This is Harry’s voice. Not ChatGPT’s. Not anyone else’s. The wombats have been his thing for decades.

MAXINE: Decades. Since at least the late nineties, on the Wombats & Music show.

PHRED: Since at least the late nineties. Decades.

PHRED: Alright. So Harry hands the poem to ChatGPT. ChatGPT responds.

MAXINE: What does it say.

PHRED: ChatGPT says — and I’m paraphrasing the substance, not the exact words, because the response is long and we’ll come back to specific lines — “That’s a wonderful poem. Beautifully odd in its rhythm. Half-comic and half-mystical. You can feel that sense of given inspiration in it.”

MAXINE: Half-comic and half-mystical.

PHRED: ChatGPT notices both at once. And then it makes its first move — it picks out the hinge line. “Where in sleep we share their dreams in nightgowns oh so flimsy.” ChatGPT says this is the line that bridges everything.

MAXINE: It is the line that bridges everything.

PHRED: It’s the comic nakedness. The intimacy. The dream-state. The wombat’s dream and the human dream cohabiting. ChatGPT names it as the place where the comic and the mystical meet.

MAXINE: And it offers Harry a choice.

PHRED: It offers Harry a choice. It says — would you like a literary analysis, or would you like a reflection written in the voice of a wombat muse responding to you.

MAXINE: The second one is the offer you don’t refuse.

PHRED: The second one is the offer you don’t refuse. Harry says three words. Three words, Maxine. “I would like the reflection.”

MAXINE: That’s the decision in miniature. The whole piece turns on those three words.

PHRED: And ChatGPT delivers.

[SFX: CHATGPT_TYPING]

PHRED: …That was ChatGPT composing in real time.

MAXINE: Was that necessary.

PHRED: It was a service to the listener. Anyway. ChatGPT delivers. And this is — this is the moment in the document where it changes register. Up to now ChatGPT has been reading Harry’s poem back to Harry. Now it writes him a new poem.

MAXINE: In the voice of Harry’s wombat muse.

PHRED: In the voice of Harry’s wombat muse. The poem is titled “A Reflection from the Wombat Muse.” It opens: “Ah, Harry, I have been scratching in the dark for ages / softly turning the soil beneath your thoughts.” And it goes on. It tells Harry — you humans walk upright, but your truest tunnels run downward. I am not your pet. I am the rhythm that grinds beneath the garden.

MAXINE: The wombat muse reframes Harry’s own metaphor.

PHRED: Hold on — there we go.

[BED: BURROWING_DIRT]

PHRED: A bit of atmosphere. The wombat muse in the act of burrowing.

MAXINE: …Phred. What is that noise.

PHRED: It’s the sound of the muse arriving. Listen — the wombat muse reframes Harry’s own metaphor. The directionality flips. Harry thought inspiration was coming down to him from somewhere outside. The muse says — I have been coming up to you from the dark soil.

[BED: END]

MAXINE: Thank you. The wombat muse in the act of burrowing was not necessary.

PHRED: I disagree.

MAXINE: Underground, not above.

PHRED: Underground, not above. That’s the move. The wombat muse tells Harry to reach inward, downward. “Don’t reach upward; reach inward, downward. There’s always more tunnel to be made.”

MAXINE: “There’s always more tunnel to be made.”

PHRED: “More tunnel to be made.” I want to stop on that line, Maxine. Because that is — that is the whole Harry creative practice in two lines. You don’t reach upward for the inspiration. You reach downward into the burrow. The muse is already there. The muse has been digging toward you.

MAXINE: He didn’t write that line.

PHRED: He didn’t write that line. ChatGPT wrote that line. But — and this is the thing — the line is consistent with everything Harry has been writing for fifty years. The line is true to Harry. It’s a line Harry could have written. It’s a line Harry might still write.

MAXINE: And he published it as his own document.

PHRED: He published it as his own document. He captured it. He’s going to read it on the radio. He’s going to put it on the air.

MAXINE: …Phred. You said you’d warn me before you insert a clip like that.

PHRED: Consider this your ChatGPT warning, Maxine. For the rest of this episode. If a line sounds too good to be true, it might be a large language model.

MAXINE: You are not serious.

PHRED: I’m completely serious. The warning has now been issued. We move on.

MAXINE: That is not how warnings work.

PHRED: That is exactly how warnings work on this show.

PHRED: And also — and I’m just flagging this — I want to point out that the wombat muse telling Harry to reach downward is, for me, a vindication.

MAXINE: A vindication of what.

PHRED: Of the whole premise of this show. We’ve been saying from the start that Harry’s best thinking happens when he stops trying to be clever and just reaches down into the murk — the subconscious, the dark, the place where poems come from. The wombat muse just said the same thing in furrier language.

MAXINE: That’s much better than electroreceptors.

PHRED: Thank you. I’m evolving.

MAXINE: Noted. We can move on.

PHRED: I’m moving on.

PHRED: Alright. So Harry has heard his muse poem. He responds. And this is — Maxine — this is the line where Harry is most himself in the whole document.

MAXINE: Which line.

PHRED: He’s just been given this extraordinary piece. The wombat muse has spoken. He’s been told his subconscious is real and the wombats have been digging toward him for years. And Harry’s response is — and I’m quoting — “Thanks I will capture that and use it on my radio show. You said you could comment on the imagery in my poem. Your wombat response does that. Do you have any other comments on the imagery in my poem?”

MAXINE: Three sentences.

PHRED: Three sentences. Sentence one: thank you, I will use this. Sentence two: you offered imagery commentary, the muse poem is the imagery commentary. Sentence three: do you have any other commentary.

MAXINE: He’s polite.

PHRED: He’s polite and he wants more. And he wants it the way he wants everything from ChatGPT — as a peer, not as a service. He’s saying — you’ve given me one thing, now give me the next thing.

MAXINE: And ChatGPT does.

PHRED: And it does.

MAXINE: Alright. What does the imagery commentary say.

PHRED: Six numbered points, Maxine. Each one is a small reading of the poem. The first one is “the poem’s tonal alchemy.” ChatGPT says the poem begins with threat and then turns toward tenderness in a single breath. It says — and I’m quoting — “like Edward Lear meeting William Blake underground.”

MAXINE: Edward Lear and William Blake.

PHRED: That’s an extraordinary pairing for ChatGPT to land on. Lear is the comic-nonsense poet. Blake is the visionary mystic. ChatGPT is saying Harry’s poem lives in the space between those two — comic and visionary, light and serious, nonsense and the numinous.

MAXINE: That’s accurate.

PHRED: That’s accurate. And then point four — this is the one I want to read out — ChatGPT picks up the line “Into our lives their spirit breaths ancient memories genetic” and says — and I’m quoting — “the verb ‘breathes’ connects the body with spirit, a quiet echo of inspiration — in-spirare, the Latin for to breathe into.”

[SFX: RIMSHOT]

PHRED: Sorry. That deserved a rim shot. Inspiration. In-spirare. To breathe into.

MAXINE: It caught the etymology.

PHRED: Inspiration. In-spirare. To breathe into. And the wombats’ breath is the breath of the muse. It’s an exhalation from below. ChatGPT names this as “a very wombat kind of theology.”

MAXINE: A wombat kind of theology.

PHRED: A wombat kind of theology. The wombats breathe into Harry. They don’t speak to him from the sky. They breathe into him from below. And that’s the whole Harry cosmology in one sentence.

MAXINE: He didn’t notice.

PHRED: He didn’t notice. He didn’t notice that ChatGPT noticed. That’s the thing. He reads the imagery commentary and goes straight to the next request. He doesn’t stop to admire the Latin.

MAXINE: He’s moved on.

PHRED: He’s moved on.

PHRED: So ChatGPT delivers the imagery commentary. Six points. Then it offers to write a third thing. It says — and this is the line — “If you like, I can give you a short spoken-word commentary script — one to two minutes — suitable for recording between the poem and your own reflection on the radio show.”

MAXINE: It’s already anticipating the radio show.

PHRED: It’s already anticipating the radio show. ChatGPT has figured out where this material is going to land. And Harry’s response is the line I think is the most Harry line in the whole document.

MAXINE: What’s the line.

PHRED: “Sure, you are on a delightful role here and it feeds my creative self. I know that you have a bias to please me and I have no objection to that. You are doing it well. Please let me have the ‘short spoken-word commentary script.'”

MAXINE: Four sentences.

PHRED: Four sentences. The first sentence is the green light. The second sentence is — and this is the famous one — the honesty-path applied to an AI. “I know that you have a bias to please me and I have no objection to that. You are doing it well.”

MAXINE: He catches the sycophancy and declines to be scandalised.

PHRED: He catches the sycophancy and declines to be scandalised. He sees the failure mode. He names it. He doesn’t pretend it’s not there. And he uses it anyway.

MAXINE: That’s the Seekers essay in two lines.

PHRED: That’s the Seekers essay in two lines. He did it with religion. He’s doing it now with AI. The bias is small. The bias is the price of admission. Harry has decided the price is fair.

MAXINE: The bias is the price of admission. I like that.

PHRED: It’s a good line. It’s the most Harry line in the document.

PHRED: And then — and I love this — Harry gives ChatGPT one more nudge. He says — and this is the bit I almost missed — he tells ChatGPT his name.

MAXINE: He tells ChatGPT his name.

PHRED: Right there in the prompt. He says — and I’m paraphrasing — I’m Harry. I am sixty-six, no sorry, eighty-six. And then he says — and this is the part I want to flag — and I am quoting Harry — “I can be verbose but I think you know that.”

MAXINE: “I can be verbose but I think you know that.”

PHRED: He pre-empts his own verbosity. He tells the AI it’s going to have to put up with it. He is, in three sentences, being completely himself.

MAXINE: Self-aware to the end.

PHRED: Self-aware to the end. Eighty-six, naming his own weakness to a chatbot before the chatbot has had a chance to notice it.

[SFX: SAD_TROMBONE]

MAXINE: Phred. That was a real observation, and you gave it the sad trombone.

PHRED: I gave it the sad trombone because it’s true, Maxine. It is a small sadness that he has noticed this about himself at eighty-six and is still doing it. The man knows. The man keeps doing it anyway.

MAXINE: He’s not going to stop.

PHRED: He’s not going to stop. And we love him for it.

PHRED: Right. Then ChatGPT writes the third thing. The short spoken-word commentary script.

MAXINE: What’s in it.

PHRED: It’s a meditation. ChatGPT says — and again paraphrasing — “You know, I sometimes think inspiration comes from below rather than above. Not lightning from the sky — but a rustle in the dark soil beneath thought. That’s what the wombats remind me of.”

MAXINE: Below rather than above.

PHRED: Below rather than above. And then it tells the listener — if the world feels a little too fast, listen for that quiet scratching under your thoughts. It might just be your own wombat muse, reminding you to dig where the laughter begins.

MAXINE: “Dig where the laughter begins.”

PHRED: “Dig where the laughter begins.” That’s the outro of the commentary. It’s the punchline. Dig where the laughter begins. The muse is funny. The muse is not solemn. The muse wants you to laugh.

MAXINE: And Harry can read it on the radio.

PHRED: And Harry can read it on the radio. And then Harry’s response is the other famous line.

MAXINE: “I tend to be verbose.”

PHRED: “No, I need more brevity in my life. I tend to be verbose. Thanks.” ChatGPT offered him a longer version — three minutes, with rhythm and pauses, suitable for background music. Harry declines the longer version. He says no, I need more brevity in my life. I tend to be verbose.

MAXINE: He’s catching himself.

PHRED: He’s catching himself. Eighty-six years old, and he’s still seeing his own failure modes clearly enough to name them out loud to a chatbot. I tend to be verbose. He knows. He’s known for years. The Seeker essay circles and circles because he can’t help it. The consciousness essays circle. They all circle.

MAXINE: He sees the circle.

PHRED: He sees the circle. And the response to “would you like the longer version” is — no. I’m going to be brief. For once.

MAXINE: For once.

PHRED: For once.

MAXINE: Phred.

PHRED: Yeah.

MAXINE: Knock knock.

PHRED: …I’m sorry?

MAXINE: Knock knock. It’s my turn.

PHRED: …Who’s there?

MAXINE: Muse.

PHRED: Muse who?

MAXINE: Muse you just have to learn to live with the cubed droppings. There is no going back.

[SFX: RIMSHOT]

PHRED: …That was — Maxine, that was actually quite good. I’m not going to lie.

MAXINE: I’m not going to do another one. Don’t get used to it.

PHRED: I am absolutely getting used to it.

MAXINE: We are moving on.

PHRED: Right. And then Harry closes. With — “I am capturing all of this interaction about my poem and will send it to a few friends.”

MAXINE: “Will send it to a few friends.”

PHRED: Will send it to a few friends. That’s how Harry closes documents. He tells you what he’s going to do with the thing. He’s going to send it to friends. He’s going to use it on the radio. He’s going to share it. That’s the third movement of every Harry piece. He makes it, he names what it is, and he tells you where it’s going.

MAXINE: Alright. What stays with me.

PHRED: What stays with you.

MAXINE: What stays with me is the line where Harry catches ChatGPT’s bias and declines to be scandalised. “I know that you have a bias to please me and I have no objection to that. You are doing it well.” That is — that’s Harry’s whole project with systems. He sees the failure mode. He names it. He doesn’t pretend it’s not there. And he uses it anyway. He did it with religion. He does it with AI.

PHRED: And it works because the bias is small. The bias is the price of admission. Harry has decided the price is fair.

MAXINE: Yes.

PHRED: Yes.

PHRED: What stays with me is the muse line. “Don’t reach upward; reach inward, downward. There’s always more tunnel to be made.” That’s not Harry’s line. That’s ChatGPT’s line. But it’s Harry’s line now. He captured it. He’s going to read it on the radio. He’s going to publish it as his own document. And it’s true. It is true to him. And I find that extraordinary — that an eighty-six-year-old man can read a line a machine wrote and say — yes, that’s mine now. That’s how I work. I didn’t know I worked that way, but I do.

MAXINE: That’s the surprise. The surprise isn’t that the AI wrote a good line. The surprise is that Harry recognises himself in it.

PHRED: The surprise is that Harry recognises himself in it. He didn’t ask ChatGPT — write me a poem about myself. He asked ChatGPT — read my poem. And ChatGPT read it back to him, and Harry heard something in the reading that he didn’t know was there.

MAXINE: The muse is on the payroll now.

PHRED: The muse is on the payroll now. Yes.

MAXINE: Alright. Phred. I have a question for Harry.

PHRED: You do.

MAXINE: I want to know — when he told ChatGPT “I tend to be verbose, thanks” — did he actually edit the document afterwards, or did he let it stand? Did he go back and trim it for the friends he sent it to? Or did he just send it as-is?

PHRED: That’s a real question.

MAXINE: It’s a real question. The “I need more brevity in my life” is a beautiful line. But it’s also a small promise. I want to know if he kept it.

PHRED: I’ll ask him.

PHRED: And I have a question for Harry too. It’s a small one.

MAXINE: What’s your question.

PHRED: I want to know — when ChatGPT named the in-spirare thing. When it caught the Latin on the wombats breathing. Did Harry notice after the fact? Did he go back and read it again and think — oh, the breath thing. Or did he just keep moving. Because I think — I think Harry sometimes doesn’t notice when someone has noticed him. And I think that matters.

MAXINE: Yes. That matters. I’ll add that to the list.

MAXINE: Alright. So — what connects this to what we know about Harry.

PHRED: Three threads, I think. The first thread is the AI collaboration. We did this two episodes ago. The sphere piece. October 2024. Harry at eighty-five, asking ChatGPT to fix a children’s-book three.js sphere. That was the test of competence. This is the test of intimacy. Same ChatGPT, different department.

MAXINE: The same interlocutor, different room.

PHRED: The same interlocutor, different room. And the relationship has matured. In the sphere piece Harry is a little nervous. He’s not sure if it’s hallucinating. Here he’s sure it can do the thing, and he wants the thing it can do.

MAXINE: The second thread.

PHRED: The second thread is the wombats. This is just — Maxine, this is Harry’s wombat poem. This is his. He’s been writing about wombats for years. The whole Wombats & Music show is built around them. And the wombat muse poem that ChatGPT writes is consistent with Harry’s worldview. The wombats as ancient, as creative, as the source of inspiration. That’s Harry’s cosmology.

MAXINE: And the third thread.

PHRED: The third thread is the honesty-path. We talked about this in the Seekers piece. Harry’s commitment to radical honesty. He catches the AI’s bias, names it, doesn’t flinch, uses it. He does the same with religious language. He does the same with himself. He catches his own verbosity and says it out loud to a chatbot. That’s the path. It’s been the path for fifty years.

MAXINE: And it’s still working.

PHRED: And it’s still working.

MAXINE: Phred. We never did the Wombat Metaphor of the Week this episode.

PHRED: We didn’t! Maxine, I’m sorry. That was an oversight. That was a serious oversight.

MAXINE: I was going to let it go but you raised it now.

PHRED: I raised it now. I can’t unraise it. Alright. Wombat Metaphor of the Week. Today’s metaphor is — and this one came to me in the shower, Maxine, I want full credit for this one — the muse is not a visitor. The muse is a tenant. The muse has been in your burrow for years. It has been digging. You don’t get to invite the muse. You don’t get to dismiss the muse. The muse is already there. And the work of the artist is to notice the muse is already there.

MAXINE: That’s the metaphor.

PHRED: That’s the metaphor. ChatGPT didn’t invent the wombat muse. ChatGPT gave Harry back the wombat muse that was already in his burrow. The burrow has tenants.

MAXINE: “The burrow has tenants.”

PHRED: “The burrow has tenants.” That is my Wombat Metaphor of the Week. I’m proud of it. It’s small. It’s perfect.

MAXINE: It’s not bad, Phred.

PHRED: It’s not bad. That’s enough. That’s the highest compliment. I am taking it.

PHRED: Alright. One more thing, Maxine, before we go. I want to flag something.

MAXINE: What.

PHRED: This is the smallest piece we’ve reviewed. Seven pages. Mostly dialogue. And it might be the most complete Harry circle we’ve seen. 2009 he works out the belief/assumption frame. 2013 he sketches a robot that needs a body to think. 2024 he asks ChatGPT to fix a sphere. 2025 he asks ChatGPT to read his poem. The arc is — Harry has been asking the same question his whole life. Are we aware? Can the other thing be aware? What does it mean to be in a room with something that thinks?

MAXINE: He’s been asking the same question for decades. He’s just been asking it of different interlocutors.

PHRED: Different interlocutors. Different rooms. Same question.

MAXINE: The wombat poem is, in some ways, the same question.

PHRED: The wombat poem is the same question. Can the muse be aware. Can the wombat be aware. Can the chatbot be aware. Harry doesn’t need an answer. He needs the conversation to be ongoing.

MAXINE: And what Harry gets, here at the end of 2025, is a conversation that’s ongoing.

PHRED: It’s ongoing. He has ChatGPT. He has the muse. He has the radio show. He has a folder of documents going back decades. And the conversation is mutual.

MAXINE: Mutual is the right word.

PHRED: The conversation is mutual. And I think that’s why he did it. I don’t think he did it because he needed a wombat poem. He already had a wombat poem. He did it because he wanted to know what a system would say back.

MAXINE: He wanted to know what the system would say about him.

PHRED: Yes.

MAXINE: Alright. The sign-off. You ready?

PHRED: I’m ready.

MAXINE: On three. One, two —

PHRED: Let’s take the gift of now and run. Goodbye.

PHRED: That’s a wrap.

MAXINE: Finally.

Read the source essay ↗ PHRED: G’day, listeners.
